Big hail is a regular visitor here. NOAA’s Storm Events Database shows hail up to 4 inches across St. Charles County on May 11, 2016, with the hardest-hit area running from near Dardenne Prairie, O’Fallon and Weldon Spring east to Cottleville and St. Peters. On May 16, 2025, NOAA logged 30 hail reports in St. Charles County and 34 in St. Louis County, with stones of 2 to 2.5 inches.
Storm damage is not always obvious. Bruised shingles, cracked vent caps and dented gutters can look fine from the ground and still cost a roof years. A free inspection, documented with photos, tells you what you are dealing with before you decide anything.

What storm damage looks like
Hail bruises and bare spots
Dark patches where granules were knocked off, or soft spots in a shingle you can feel. IBHS testing found that even hail under 1 inch strips granules and speeds aging.
Dented gutters, vents and AC fins
Dings in soft metal are easy to see from the yard and a good reason to have the roof itself checked.
Missing or lifted shingles
Look for shingles in the yard, bare underlayment or rows that sit out of line, especially along the eaves, rakes and ridge.
Cracked siding or broken screens
NOAA’s severe storms lab notes that wind-driven hail can tear up siding and break windows. Check the walls that faced the storm.
New leaks
Water where there was none before is the clearest sign of all. Get it covered and call.

Hail and wind do different damage
Hail damage is about impact. The National Weather Service treats hail of 1 inch, about the size of a quarter, as severe, and NOAA’s severe storms lab says stones of 1 to 1.75 inches fall at 25 to 40 mph. Smaller storms add up too: in IBHS testing, weathered shingles hit by repeated small hail became up to 10 times more susceptible to damage from later large hail than new shingles.
Wind damage is about uplift. FEMA’s roofing guidance says a roof’s border is at more risk from uplift and wind-driven rain than the field of the roof, and the weather service’s severe threshold for wind is 58 mph.
Your claim stays yours
Missouri law draws clear lines for roofers, as of 2026. Section 407.725 bars any contractor from representing you or negotiating your claim, and from offering to pay or rebate any part of your deductible. If you sign a contract that depends on your claim, you can cancel it before midnight of the fifth business day after your insurer tells you in writing that all or part of the claim is not covered.
So our part is documentation and explanation: photos, meeting your adjuster, and walking you through the findings and scope line by line. Decisions about the claim stay with you. Our insurance claims page lays out every step in detail.
Before you sign with anyone
Missouri’s Department of Commerce and Insurance offers plain advice for hiring after a storm.
- Be there when a contractor inspects your home.
- Never pay the whole bill before the work is done.
- Get more than one estimate, and make sure they cover the same work.
- Ask for proof of liability and workers’ compensation insurance, then call the insurance company to verify it.
- Read any assignment of benefits carefully, since it can hand your rights under the policy to someone else.

FAQ
Storm and Hail Damage Repair: questions
Ask us anything at (314) 222-9529.
Should I call my insurer or a roofer first?
Either can come first. Missouri’s insurance department advises contacting your insurer as soon as possible, and a free inspection with photos helps you describe what happened. If there is damage worth claiming, we help you make the call.
Can you cover my deductible?
No. Missouri law bars any contractor from paying or rebating any part of an insurance deductible, and an offer to do it is a red flag.
How do I know if the hail was big enough?
Size is only part of it. Wind, the age of your shingles and repeated small storms all play a role, so a close inspection with photos is the reliable way to know.
How long do I have to file a claim?
Your policy sets the deadlines, so check it or ask your agent. Damage is also easier to tie to a specific storm when it is documented soon after.
How can I check out a roofer after a storm?
The state’s claims guide suggests asking for references, checking with the Better Business Bureau and the Attorney General’s office, and finding out where an unfamiliar contractor is based. We are family-owned, based in O’Fallon, and a BBB Accredited Business since May 2025.
