Wentzville roofing, from first replacements to hail repair

Half of Wentzville’s homes were built in 2008 or later, and the city sits on the stretch of I-70 where 3-inch hail fell in March 2024. That pairing shapes most roofing decisions here.

Wentzville began in 1855 as a narrow town seven blocks long, laid out by William M. Allen beside the new railroad and named for the engineer who built the line, Erasmus Livingston Wentz. It grew slowly for more than a century. General Motors started building its assembly plant here in 1980, and most of the city’s houses have gone up since 2000.

Correll Roofing Co. is a family-owned roofer based a few miles east in O’Fallon. For a lot of Wentzville homeowners the questions come down to two: did the last hailstorm do real damage, and is the original roof ready to be replaced? A free inspection, documented with photos, answers both before you spend anything.

Local homes

A railroad town that became 50 new subdivisions

Only about one Wentzville home in ten was built before 1980, by the Census Bureau’s count, and the city’s December 2018 inventory shows how the rest arrived. It listed 50 newer subdivisions, among them Heritage Pointe, Stonemoor, Peruque Hills Estates and The Golf Club of Wentzville, holding 5,672 recorded lots.

When every roof on a street went on within a decade, those roofs wear on about the same schedule: one storm leaves similar damage up and down the block, and replacements come in clusters. If your shingles are original, the next roof will be the house’s first, which makes it the right time to look at attic ventilation, the deck and the gutters along with the shingles.

Hail and wind

Hail on the I-70 corridor

Inside a 5-mile radius of Wentzville, NOAA’s Storm Events Database shows 12 hail reports between January 2015 and June 2026; 11 measured at least an inch, across 11 separate days. The biggest came on March 14, 2024: stones around 3 inches near Foristell in mid-afternoon, then a second round up to 2 inches near Flint Hill about two hours later. NOAA’s narrative for that I-70 swath names Wentzville among the cities hit and notes roof and siding damage to hundreds of homes and businesses.

The corridor has been hit before. An overnight storm on March 27, 2020 dropped stones of 1 to 1.5 inches along I-70 through Flint Hill, Wentzville and O’Fallon, and on May 13, 2023 a swath up to 1.5 inches fell between Foristell and Wentzville. The latest report inside the 5-mile circle was 1.25-inch hail on April 16, 2024.

Permits and local rules

Building permits in Wentzville come from the Building Division of Community Development, at City Hall, 1001 Schroeder Creek Blvd. Its permit page lists work that needs a permit and calls the list not exhaustive, but roofing is not on it, so check with the division before work starts; your roofer should handle that. Since February 23, 2026, applications go through the city’s SmartGov portal.

Two more city rules are worth knowing. Every contractor working in Wentzville, general or sub, needs a city-issued contractor license, renewed each year by February 28. And the city’s permit application reminds owners that city approval is not subdivision approval, so ask your HOA about its requirements before changing a roof’s color or material.

FAQ

Roofing in Wentzville: questions

Call (314) 222-9529 if yours is not here.

Does Wentzville require matching shingles or siding after hail?

The city points to Resolution #23-1953: if a damaged roof plane or wall elevation has no suitable match, the whole plane or elevation is to be replaced, and a big difference in color or texture may mean replacing the material on the entire house. That is a city workmanship standard. How your policy pays for matching is a question for your agent or adjuster.

My Wentzville house was built around 2008. Does it need a new roof?

Not because of age alone. An 18-year-old roof can be sound or worn out depending on the shingle, the attic ventilation and the storms it has taken. Photos from a free inspection show whether you need a repair, have a claim worth filing, or can leave it alone for now.

Is a permit required to re-roof in Wentzville?

The Building Division’s published permit list does not address roofing, and the city says that list is not exhaustive. Ask the division, or have your roofer confirm, before the job is scheduled, and check your subdivision’s rules as well.

Can a roofer handle my insurance claim from the March 14, 2024 storm?

No. Missouri law (RSMo 407.725) bars contractors from representing you or negotiating on a roof claim, so the claim stays yours. A roofer can photograph the damage, help you call it in, meet your adjuster at the house and go over the adjuster’s scope with you line by line. Ask your agent about your policy’s deadlines.
