Pevely roofing, from first re-roofs to storm repair

About half of Pevely’s homes were built since 2000, and many of those first roofs are reaching the age when replacement comes up. Here is what Pevely owners should know.

Pevely was platted in 1860 and still had only 416 residents in 1950, three years before it incorporated as a city. Most of its houses came much later, and today it is a Jefferson County town of newer subdivisions alongside older homes, duplexes and manufactured homes.

About a third of occupied homes here are rented, so the roof question often lands on a landlord as well as an owner-occupant. Either way it comes down to three things: how old the roof is, what weather has done to it, and what it will need next. A free inspection with photos answers all three.

Local homes

Pevely’s homes are mostly from this century

In Census estimates, 38.3% of Pevely’s housing dates from the 2000s and another 12.1% from the 2010s, with about 28% from the 1950s through the 1970s. Detached single-family houses make up about 61% of homes, manufactured homes 14%, and duplexes and apartment buildings the rest.

A roof installed in 2005 turns 21 in 2026, the age when standard asphalt shingles often start to show wear: granules collecting in gutters, curling edges, and seal strips that let go in high wind. The first replacement is also the right time to check that attic ventilation works and to replace flashing at walls and chimneys instead of reusing it.

Hail and wind

The 2023 tornado and the March 2025 hail

On April 15, 2023, an EF1 tornado formed on the northwest side of Pevely and moved into the northern part of town, causing minor roof, siding, tree and sign damage before lifting on the west side of Oak Valley Golf Course and Resort. The National Weather Service put its peak wind at 100 mph along a path just under a mile long.

Hail is reported less often here: NOAA has eight reports on file within 5 miles of Pevely since 2015. Five of them came on March 14, 2025, including 1.5-inch hail in Pevely itself and near Glen Park.

Permits and local rules

Inside city limits, the City of Pevely’s Code Enforcement and Building Department at 401 Main Street oversees construction under the building codes adopted by the Board of Aldermen. Its permit FAQ lists decks, sheds, fences, driveways, room additions, interior remodels and more, but does not mention roofing either way.

Call the department (636-475-4452) before work starts to confirm whether your re-roof needs a permit; if it does, your roofer should handle it. Homes outside the city in unincorporated Jefferson County answer to the county’s Code Enforcement Division in Hillsboro.

FAQ

Roofing in Pevely: questions

Call (314) 222-9529 if yours is not here.

Does Pevely require a permit to replace a roof?

The city’s published permit list does not say either way. Ask the Code Enforcement and Building Department at City Hall before work starts, and if a permit is required, expect your roofer to apply for it.

Can my downspouts drain into the sewer in Pevely?

No. Section 715.130 of the city code prohibits connecting roof downspouts to a building sewer or drain that leads to the public sanitary sewer, and the city’s sewer inspector can check how roof water is handled. Send downspouts onto the yard or to an approved storm outlet instead.

My Pevely house was built in the 2000s. Is it time for a new roof?

It depends on the roof’s history more than its birthday. A roof from the early 2000s is past 20 years old, and the 2023 tornado and the 2025 hail added wear on some streets. An inspection will tell you whether you need repairs, a replacement, or nothing yet.
