Webster Groves grew along the Pacific Railroad. In 1892 the developers of Webster Park promoted their new community as the “Queen of the Suburbs,” and in 1896 Webster, Old Orchard, Webster Park, Tuxedo Park and Selma merged into one city. Census estimates date 35% of today’s housing units before 1940 and another 33% between 1940 and 1959, so about two in three homes here predate 1960.

The city’s own building FAQ notes that many Webster Groves homes were built before building codes were adopted. On a roof, that can mean board decking, flashing patched more than once, or attic ventilation nobody planned. Family-owned and local, with 20+ years in roofing, Correll offers free inspections here that come with photos you can go through at your own kitchen table.

Local homes

Slate, tile, built-in gutters and tall trees

Webster Park, Central Webster and Marshall Place each have preservation guidelines that the city’s Architectural Review Board uses when owners propose changes. Webster Park’s name the roof coverings found there, asphalt shingles, clay tile, slate and cedar shake, and ask that they be preserved whenever possible, that repairs resemble the original materials and that built-in gutters be kept when possible.

The same guidelines describe streets where most homes are two stories high and surrounded by tall trees, which fits much of the city. Big trees fill gutters, keep north slopes damp and drop limbs in storms. On older houses we look hard at valleys, chimneys and any built-in gutter hidden in a cornice, since that is where water tends to find its way in.

Hail and wind

Hail on 21 separate days since 2015

NOAA’s Storm Events Database shows hail within 5 miles of Webster Groves on 21 separate days since January 2015. One was May 19, 2025, the evening a hailstone measuring 2 inches was photographed near Brentwood; another was April 27, 2026, a day of repeated severe storms and widespread large hail across the region.

Wind adds its own damage under all that canopy. On June 27, 2025, NOAA recorded a swath of downed trees and large limbs from Webster Groves and Shrewsbury southeast through Marlborough toward Affton. After a storm like that, look for lifted shingles, dented gutters and limbs resting on the roof, and get it checked before the next rain.

Permits and local rules

In Webster Groves, building permits come from the Department of Planning and Development’s Building Division at City Hall, 4 E. Lockwood Avenue (314-963-5300). Its pages do not say whether a roof replacement needs a permit, so ask the Building Division first; a good roofer will take care of the permit if one is needed. The permit application lists a residential exterior category that may need Architectural Review Board approval.

The ARB reviews exterior changes across the city, delegating routine items to staff, and city preservation material says ordinary maintenance and repair of existing features needs no ARB or Historic Preservation Commission review. In a historic district, that district’s guidelines are what the ARB reads.

FAQ

Roofing in Webster Groves: questions

Call (314) 222-9529 if yours is not here.

Will a new roof on a historic Webster Groves house need review?

It depends on what changes. Repairing existing features is ordinary maintenance, while exterior alterations go to the Architectural Review Board through the permit process. Replacing slate or tile with a different material on a slope seen from the street is the kind of change to ask about first.

What hours can a roofing crew work in Webster Groves?

The Building Division limits construction to 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturdays, and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sundays and on New Year’s Day, the Fourth of July, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Check the city’s site for changes before your project starts.

Should I keep my built-in gutters?

The Webster Park, Central Webster and Marshall Place guidelines all say to retain built-in gutters when possible. A leak is often a lining or flashing problem rather than a reason to remove one, so get it inspected before anyone recommends tearing it out.

Do you work on slate roofs?

Yes. Slate is on our list of roofing materials, along with asphalt shingles and metal. On a slate roof, the first job is finding out whether the trouble is a few broken slates or the fasteners and flashing under them, because that decides between repair and replacement.
