Ellisville’s roots run along Manchester Road, once a trade route used by Europeans and American Indians. The first post office opened on May 2, 1843, Clarkson Road is named for an early owner of the Ellis farm, and residents incorporated a village in 1932 to form a public school district, becoming a fourth-class city in 1957.
Most of the housing came later. The city’s 2022 comprehensive plan finds that 22 percent of Ellisville’s homes were built in the 1970s, more than in any other decade, and that half went up between 1970 and 2000. Correll Roofing Co. is based in O’Fallon and inspects Ellisville roofs for free, with photos of what we find.

Local homes
Built mostly from 1960 to 2000
Using 2019 Census figures, the city’s plan counts 620 homes from the 1960s, 882 from the 1970s and 606 from the 1980s, with only about 7 percent built after 2010. The oldest neighborhoods sit north of Manchester Road and between Oak Hill Drive and Reinke Road to the south. The Hilltop Area, along Marsh Avenue, Hilltop Road, Fairview Drive and Field Avenue, is a designated preservation district of larger, well-kept homes.
Houses from those decades raise predictable roof questions. If yours has been re-roofed before, find out how many layers are up there and how the deck has held up before choosing a shingle. An older attic may need more ventilation than it has, and if the gutters and wood fascia are original, they have taken 40 to 50 years of weather.
Hail and wind
Hail on 13 different days since 2015
Ellisville’s hail record in NOAA’s database reads like a calendar: 14 reports within 5 miles from January 2015 to June 2026, on 13 separate days, so hail here has come often rather than all at once. Thirteen of the 14 measured 1 inch or larger. Golf-ball hail, 1.75 inches, reached that circle on five different days, three of them in 2023: April 15, May 13 and June 30.
Ellisville’s latest entry came at 12:38 p.m. on April 27, 2026: 1.25-inch hail near Clarkson Valley, on a day of repeated severe storms across the region, with the Storm Prediction Center’s risk level at Moderate. For scale, the National Weather Service uses 1.75-inch hail as the mark for a considerable damage threat in its warnings.

FAQ
Roofing in Ellisville: questions
Call (314) 222-9529 if yours is not here.
Do Ellisville roofs need a building permit?
Usually not. The city’s roof letter says permits are not required for roofs unless the work is structural. The new roof still has to meet Ellisville’s requirements for ice shield, felt, drip edge, flashing and ventilation.
Is ice and water shield mandatory on an Ellisville roof?
Yes. The city says it requires and enforces ice shields along with felt, drip edges, flashing and ventilation. Not every city in the area does (Eureka, for one, does not), so make sure any estimate you compare includes it.
My house was built in the 1970s. What should I ask before re-roofing?
Ask how many layers of shingles are on it now, what shape the deck is in, and whether the attic has enough ventilation. Those answers shape the job more than the shingle color, and a free inspection with photos covers all three.
How can I check out a roofer in Ellisville?
The city’s permits page points homeowners to the Better Business Bureau’s list of accredited roofing contractors in the St. Louis area. Correll Roofing Co. earned BBB accreditation in May 2025. Whoever you hire, ask for references and for warranty terms in writing.
