Roofing for Fenton homes, inside city limits and out

A Fenton address covers far more ground than the City of Fenton. Here is how roofing works for houses by the Meramec, in the city’s 1990s subdivisions and across the 63026 ZIP code.

William Lindsay Long founded Fenton on the west bank of the Meramec in 1818, and today the city reaches from that riverfront up to the stores at Gravois Bluffs. The city itself is small, with 4,088 residents in Census estimates, but roughly 45,000 people live in the 63026 ZIP code, and the city notes that it covers only a small portion of that ZIP.

That matters for a roof, because the address on your mailbox does not decide who regulates the work; the location of the house does. Settle that first, then get a straight read on the roof itself. Our inspections are free, documented with photos and carry no obligation.

Local homes

A 1990s building boom, plus older streets

Fenton grew from 3,346 residents in 1990 to 4,360 in 2000, and its houses show it: the 1990s account for 30.3% of the city’s homes in Census estimates, more than any other decade, with the 1980s next at 17.3%. Detached houses make up about 85% of the total.

If a 1990s house still has its first roof, that roof is 25 to 35 years old, a long run for asphalt shingles in Missouri weather. Homes from that decade also tend to have more roof planes, valleys and wall-to-roof joints than older ranches, and those joints are where leaks usually start. Check the original gutters at the same time, since an overflowing gutter can pass for a roof leak at the fascia.

Hail and wind

Two March hailstorms a year apart

Since January 2015, NOAA’s Storm Events Database has collected 26 hail reports from within 5 miles of Fenton. On March 14, 2024, the National Weather Service described a wide swath of hail up to 2 inches across St. Louis County and listed Fenton first among the places it fell; the 2-inch report near Morschels that day is the largest in the local record. Exactly a year later, March 14, 2025 added 15 more reports within 5 miles in a single evening.

South of the city on May 26, 2024, one of that day’s ten tornadoes across the metro and southwest Illinois touched down at Highway 141 and Fiedler Lane, and a tree it uprooted landed on a house, damaging the porch and roof.

Permits and local rules

Inside city limits, start with the City of Fenton’s Community Development Department. The city issues Municipal Zoning Approval, says that approval must come before any building permit or construction project, and contracts with the St. Louis County Department of Public Works for building permits and inspections. Under the county’s re-roofing guide, a like-for-like asphalt shingle job needs no building permit if the roof’s slope is at least 4:12, while a flatter roof, more than 25% new sheathing or a change of material does.

Houses with a Fenton address outside the city deal with St. Louis County directly, and the stretch of 63026 that reaches into Jefferson County, around Murphy, falls under Jefferson County Code Enforcement. Because requirements shift, check with the right office before a tear-off is scheduled, and let your roofer handle the paperwork.

FAQ

Roofing in Fenton: questions

Call (314) 222-9529 if yours is not here.

My mail says Fenton. Am I in the city?

Not necessarily. The city says the 63026 ZIP code covers a large area and the municipality is only a small portion of it. Your property tax bill shows which city, if any, your house is in, and that tells you which office handles permits.

Does the City of Fenton have to sign off on a roofing permit?

When the county requires a re-roof permit for a house inside a municipality, its guide asks for a site plan stamped by that city’s zoning officer. Fenton’s Community Development Department (636-349-8110) can tell you whether your project needs zoning approval first.

How bad was the March 14, 2024 hail around Fenton?

The National Weather Service named Fenton first in its list of St. Louis County communities where large hail fell, and the biggest report nearby measured 2 inches. Stones that size can crack shingles and dent vents and gutters, so a roof nobody has checked since deserves a free inspection.
